Nokia, KDDI team up to deliver fully cloudified RAN solution for 5G

Nokia has recently announced that it has been working with KDDI, a Japanese mobile operator, in a joint initiative that is mainly aimed at delivering a completely cloudified RAN solution. The planned Proof of Concept (PoC) will be using the AirScale All-in-Cloud BTS Solution of Nokia and further help KDDI to research into the virtualized and flexible radio network technology capable of supporting the wide network performance needs within the 5G era.

KDDI helps join an expanding portfolio of customers from worldwide using the Cloud RAN solutions of Nokia. The AirScale All-in-Cloud BTS of Nokia is a completely cloudified 5G BTS, that places a real-time as well as non-real-time baseband within the cloud. The real-time baseband that is virtualized usually takes place at a far edge of the network to be able to meet the extreme potential requirements while also providing the capability to scale and meet demand.

It is essentially a part of an AirScale Cloud Ran solution of Nokia that offers quite a flexible mixture of both cloud-based and local processing. AirScale All-in-Cloud BTS shall be utilized in the planned PoC to offer a network configuration of base station virtualization that is considerably flexible while also enabling the provision of a 5G network.

KDDI has launched the commercial aspect of 5G services in March this year and has been pursuing a particular policy of collaborations with global firms to also incorporate newer ideas as well as technologies in the 5G network. KDDI has reportedly been working with Nokia on the PoC and 5G core standalone network trials.

The Cloud Ran of Nokia has already been running the commercial traffic within the first 5G network that is cloud-based in North America, along with 5G AirScale Cloud BTS that usually virtualizes the non-real—time functionalities. Nokia has been working on a rising number of Cloud RAN PoCs as well as trials with a notable customer base across the world.
