Mahindra automotive evaluating Flint, Michigan for its second U.S. plant

Mahindra, the Mumbai-based automotive manufacturer recently announced plans to open a manufacturing plants in Flint (Michigan), for manufacturing vehicles including mail delivery trucks for the United States market. The plant is also expected to create a job pool of up to 2,000, cite sources.

For the record, Mahindra already produces Roxor, its rugged off-road work & recreation vehicle at its manufacturing unit in Auburn Hills, Michigan, which is already at its full capacity.

Mahindra said in a statement that this crucial facility expansion is intended to support manufacturing and assembly of new products for the United States market. The automotive manufacturer also said that the production of mail delivery trucks depends on whether Mahindra wins the next generation delivery vehicle contract issued by the U.S. Postal Service, which is estimated to be announced by the end of 2019 and there are four more contenders for the contract.

As per sources close to the matter, the automotive manufacturer is also in talks with other states that have suitable sites and the firm’s decision can be influenced by the incentives that Michigan is expected to provide.

Rick Haas, CEO, Mahindra Automotive North America was reportedly quoted saying that the company is keeping options open but Buick City site in Flint is a potential fit for the company. He added saying that the Buick City site is close to the company’s current facility, which can improve the overall enterprise efficiency.
