BAIC BJEV to develop six new fully electric vehicles by 2021

To support the production of the vehicles, the company has set up a 50,000-square meter development facility.

BJEV – the electric car subsidiary of China based automobile company BAIC reportedly announced the development of six new completely electric models by 2021.

According to trusted sources, the proposed models are expected to be SUVs, sedans and vans. Apparently, to support the production of the vehicles the company has put in order USD 291 million and set up a 50,000-square meter (538,000-square foot) development facility.

According to trusted sources, the new facility will contain over 400 testing rooms and 88 laboratories which would focus on the development and testing of electric vehicles. Additionally, the development center will focus on electric control unit, battery, electric motor, intelligent connectivity, lightweight materials, and complete vehicle application.

For the record, the development facility will enable newly designed vehicles to go through 378 vehicle tests, 4774 component tests, and 407 system tests. As BAIC and its partners continue to invest in R&D of new energy vehicles, the second phase of the center will be ready by 2020.

According to Wan Gang, one of the foremost advocates for China’s clean energy vehicle programs, was reportedly quoted stating that the launch of the new energy vehicle experiment center will facilitate BAIC’s goal of enhancing the product quality and safety coupled with improving the innovation ability and enhancing high levels of co-operation, he further added.

As per reliable sources, BJEV has witnessed a steady growth rate with a 21% increase in total sales in the first half of 2019 as compared to the same period in the previous year. Reportedly, in June 2019, 40% of 65,159 vehicles were sold. The parent company is also planning to take BAIC BJEV public in the third quarter of the year.

Apparently, BAIC BJEV collaborated with Magna to produce a fully electric vehicle in Zhenjiang, China, earlier this year. While BAIC will be managing the development facility, Magna will completely build the vehicle.
